Sciatica

Sciatic nerve has brought many to their knees.

It has caused 6 foot over 200 pound people to the floor. It makes it hard to get out of bed, the chair, or the car.

Sciatic pain is caused when the sciatic nerve, a bundle of nerves from the low back that travel down the back of the thigh, becomes inflamed and irritated.

Common symptoms of sciatic nerve pain are:

  • Pain in the glutes
  • Pain down the back of the thigh, legs, and feet
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Sharp, severe pain
  • Difficulty walking

In our Upland Chiropractic office, we’ve found that there are three major reasons for sciatica:

Lumbar Disc Issue

When the disc of the spine are damaged, it can lead to an inflammatory response.  This can cause irritation to the sciatic nerve leading to pain and discomfort. Often times, this is associated with disc bulges or herniations.

Pelvic Misalignments

The pelvis is the foundation of your spine. There are many factors that can lead to pelvis issues. A trip or fall on the ground, sports injury, and sitting on a wallet can be contributors. Leg pain during pregnancy can be common due to the shifting necessary for proper delivery of the baby. The list is endless for causes of pelvic problems. And when they occur, it leads to irritation of the sciatic nerve causing leg pain.

Piriformis Muscle

The piriformis muscle attaches from the sacrum to the femur (also known as the leg bone). The muscle can become tight or spasm when pelvis issues occur. When this happens, the sciatic nerve that runs underneath the muscle can become inflamed. This is known as Piriformis Syndrome. It is common to treat the muscle, but working on the pelvis is often a better solution.

Treatment for Sciatica or Sciatic Nerve Pain

The key to resolving sciatica is discovering the cause. It is common to take pain medications which help to cope with the pain. However, this type of treatment is temporary. It requires an approach that works on getting to the root cause of the problem.

Our Upland Chiropractic office works on locating the cause of your pain. We understand that in order to get a long term fix, it requires getting to the source of the problem.
