Pain sucks!

Let’s be real. No one in their right mind likes to feel pain. Pain can really cause significant problems. It can affect your mood, emotions, lifestyle, ability to work, and so many other areas of your life. In times of discomfort, you might even feel helpless or hopeless.

Here are 5 rules to follow if you are in pain:

#1 Allow For Your Emotions

You are not your best self when you are in pain, and that’s ok. You may feel irritated, depressed, sad, or down. The key here is to know that you’re allowed to feel this way. Give yourself permission.  However, don’t allow yourself to stay down. Do things that can help improve your mood. Get outdoors, surround yourself with people you love, and communicate how you feel.

#2 Focus On What You Can Control

Feeling helpless and out of control can lead to frustration. When you focus on things within your control, it can give you a feeling of empowerment and hopefulness. Focus on educating yourself. Learn about the body. What is actually causing the pain? Seek answers. Focus on things that can uplift your mood. You might need to modify your activities due to the pain, but find new and creative ways to get around.

#3 Create An Environment For Healing

This can come from many different elements. It can mean changing your diet, thoughts, or actions. If you tend to eat processed foods, consider eating more whole foods. Eating fruits and vegetables can help reduce inflammation and increase the amount of nutrients consumed. Meditate to clear and destress the mind or pray to tap into something greater than yourself. Look at your habits for poor ergonomics, posture, and positions. Oftentimes, our pain comes from the years of abnormal wear and tear from our daily habits.

#4 Stay Optimistic

Optimism means to be hopeful about the future. When you are hopeful about treatment, it can help improve the outcome. Take for example the “placebo effect”. Many people’s symptoms improve simply because of the belief that the treatment is helping them. It is their positive beliefs that actually helped them to heal. Stay hopeful. Stay optimistic. Whatever form of treatment or therapy you decide to do, optimism is a key element in feeling relief.

#5 Get Help

Unfortunately, procrastination can lead to problems getting worse. Either we become too busy, hope it will go away, or feel that it isn’t painful enough to be concerned. Whatever the reason, problems left uncorrected can lead to more significant problems in the future. Seek help and answers sooner than later. If you have been seeking help but not found relief, continue searching. Not all doctors are the same. Just because one doctor might not know how to help you, doesn’t mean there isn’t another one that might have more answers.

If you are struggling with pain, I hope these rules help to encourage you. I understand that pain is never fun, but if you follow these 5 rules, you will get through this.

Stay hopeful.
